Single Phase Compactor Motors

Replacement single phase electric motors for industrial trash compactors. 5HP at 110V or 220V. Designed for vertical compactors, small commercial stationary units, and any installation without three phase electrical service. NEMA TEFC enclosures standard.

What this page covers

Single phase compactor motors run on standard residential or light-commercial electrical service. The maximum practical horsepower on single phase is 5HP — beyond that, three phase is required. That 5HP limit caps single phase use to vertical compactors (cardboard/recycling crushers) and small stationary commercial compactors.

PRT single phase motors are NEMA TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) — standard for compactor service because they tolerate the dust, debris, and occasional moisture exposure of waste-handling environments. Standard frames are 145T for 5HP at 110/220V.

How to choose

Choose 110V for compactors installed on standard household-style electrical circuits. Choose 220V for higher-amperage light commercial circuits. Frame size is typically 145T for 5HP single phase compactor motors.

Verify the existing motor's voltage at the data plate before ordering — running a 110V motor at 220V damages the windings instantly.

Frequently asked questions

What's the maximum horsepower for a single phase compactor motor?

5HP. Above that, the in-rush current at startup exceeds what single phase service can deliver. 10HP and up require three phase electrical service.

How much current does a 5HP single phase compactor motor draw?

At 110V, peak in-rush current is around 200A (with continuous duty around 50A). At 220V, peak is around 100A and continuous around 25A. Size the breaker for in-rush, not continuous.

Can a single phase motor run on three phase electrical service?

Not directly — the windings are different. If you have three phase service available, you'd run a dedicated single phase circuit to the compactor, or replace the motor with a three phase version.

What compactors use single phase 5HP motors?

Vertical compactors (the freestanding cardboard-and-recycling crushers in retail back rooms), small stationary commercial compactors (under 5-yard capacity), and most residential-adjacent installations.
