Dumpster Casters & Wheels

Replacement casters and wheels for commercial dumpsters and compactor receiver containers — load ratings from 300 lbs to 1,000 lbs, swivel and rigid, bolt-on or weld-on.

What this page covers

Replacement casters and wheels for commercial dumpsters and compactor receiver containers. PRT stocks load ratings from 300 lbs (light recycling containers) to 1,000 lbs (heavy compactor containers), in swivel and rigid configurations, with bolt-on or weld-on mounting.

How to choose the right dumpster caster

Three decisions drive the selection:

  1. Load rating. Divide the loaded weight of the container by the number of casters, then add a 25% safety margin. Most 2-yard front-load dumpsters use 500–700 lb casters per corner; 6-yard containers and compactor receiver units typically need 1,000 lb.
  2. Mount type. Weld-on casters are stronger and the standard for heavy-duty containers. Bolt-on casters trade some load capacity for in-field replaceability and are common on lighter containers, recycling carts, and shop carts.
  3. Caster type. A typical four-corner setup uses two swivel casters at the front (for steering) and two rigid casters at the rear (for stability). All-swivel configurations are easier to maneuver but harder to push in a straight line.

Wheel material matters for the environment: polyurethane handles indoor/outdoor mixed use, phenolic is best for high-heat areas (boiler rooms, kitchens), and steel is for the heaviest industrial loads.

Frequently asked questions

What load rating do I need for a dumpster caster?

Match the caster load rating to the loaded weight of the dumpster divided by the number of casters, with a 25% safety margin. Most 2-yard front-load dumpsters use 500-700 lb casters; compactor containers use 1,000 lb.

Should I choose swivel or rigid dumpster casters?

A typical setup uses two swivel casters at the front of the dumpster and two rigid casters at the rear. This gives steering at the leading edge and stability through the load.

Are bolt-on or weld-on casters better?

Weld-on casters are stronger and preferred for heavy-duty applications. Bolt-on casters are easier to replace in the field and are common on lighter dumpsters and recycling containers.

Do PRT casters fit compactor containers?

Yes. PRT stocks heavy-duty compactor casters rated to 1,000 lbs designed for self-contained and stationary compactor receiver containers.
